Sure, I’ll admit that the Force Awakened Rey has some flaws.
She’s an orphan, scavenger, and is often taken advantage by men or male type creatures. Case-in-point – the trader who issues out rations.
She knows she’s being cheated – but I don’t think those are personal flaws. Rather, they’re cultural/Marxist expressions we all know way to well. The trader is part of the 1%. She, like her cohorts, are representatives of the 99%. Rey is just an expression of the female version – an unwilling submissive of the bourgeoisie. Because she is a female and the movie is based around her, how she’s treated is more glaring than Finn.
This can be akin to Barbie – Do I wear the pink dress or the pink dress with sparkles? Hair? Up or down? The reflected interior debates can be endless. In the end, pointless since they have to be made again and no one really remembers or cares.
Still, Rey is exceedingly talented. She’s multi-lingual and, apparently, becomes proficient or masters any weapon she’s exposed to. Let’s not forget the Millennium Falcon sequence or how easily the stormtrooper decided to drop his weapon — That must have had a couple of funny out-takes.
She inspires some positive traits in others – like Hans. They seem to have shared a budding respectful relationship. Finn’s lies could be considered a personal cover – as if he was afraid he’d frighten her if she knew the truth. Despite being true to his own nature and disgusted by the violence, he demonstrates just how easily he’s willing to lie to maintain contact with Rey.
Rey may not inspire perfection, but betterment – room to grow – and her protection and acceptance is the prize.
Again, back to Barbie. The aging lady is an actress, a fairy, mermaid, astronaut, baby sitter, model… everything but male. She can speak several languages, make any outfit look gorgeous, all while keeping an impossible figure that is beyond human.
Her friends are few, but powerful in their own way. She’s, of course, the undocumented leader and should a social engagement present itself, they’re in full lace regalia to celebrate.
In the thick, the personal decision of hair, nail, and light saber skills are more than adequate to overcome any foe. The audience can take somewhat comfort it knowing the good – as the director wants it perceived – will always win because evil wears to much make-up.
Why, may you wonder? Why is Rey the way Rey is?
Simply – the main influence of character creation is a male = not a female. Society paints women in a one of three ways – maid, mother, crone. Since mother and crone are sealed, the maid is left – and is perfect.
Placed upon a pedestal for all to see, admire, but not touch, she exists. Well, at least until Trump bumps by.
