No, I don’t mean Harvey Dent (Two Face), but rather the hurricane, of course.
I can’t help but pay attention to it. Fox, CNN, and other broadcasters directly talk about the hurricane or shrink the redundant blue/green/red/yellow swirls to the right-hand corner of the screen just in case if people don’t watch it, it could vanish. It’s like America just can’t stop watching a slow moving train wreck.
– We know it’s there. We know it sucks. We know everyone should be evacuated, although some don’t want to be. We know it’s raining. We just know.
Still, I couldn’t seem to stop watching the resetting hurricane spirals. Blue/green for water dumpage. Red/yellow/orange for pressure. Either way, it’s bad news. This morning, there was potential for it to become a Category 2. Now, I’m hearing Category 3.
After living in Florida for so many years, I guess I became somewhat fascinated with hurricanes. They’re an unbridled destructive force and so full of wasted energy. If Harvey could be harvested, the rain alone could easily nourish California and stop the wildfires. Instead, it’s going to cause a lot of property damage and loss of life.
Most of my time in Florida was working for a crappy cable/internet/phone company. The people – generally great. The service – not so great although we mostly tried to do our best. As one of the “senior members,” although not paid as such, I was on call 24/7 during hurricane season. I had to be there, no matter what, to bring the phones on-line and to be a cheap psychologist for the customers who called in. (I don’t know how many I talked to who didn’t care about the service interruption… they where just worried about the cat/family/stuff rotting in the fridge. Hats off to the suicide hotline volunteers.)
Anyway, during that time in my life, I felt really needed. I was in Florida for Katrina. St. Pete got some wicked backlash from that storm. I was there when Florida was ravaged by four hurricanes within a month. …
I really don’t know what the purpose of this blog is. There’s a lot of other stuff on my mind. …. Just, be safe Texas. Don’t be stupid. If you’re on the coast, leave. Yeah, it’s cool to defend the house and stuff… but it’s not worth drowning or dying.
Take care.
