Fall of Winter

It isn’t time yet.

Look, I know we’re at the end of August.
September is just around the corner.  The kids started school last week.
The swimming pools are closing down for the season after Labor Day — in just about a week and a half.

But, it’s to early.
The trees are losing their brilliant green.   Lightening bugs are becoming scarce.
Cicada’s are littering the ground with their shells.

—-  Fall is coming and winter will be here in short order.

It’s just to soon.

I don’t say that because I’m really not fond of winter.
–   Winter is great… from a distance.    As long as I don’t have to drive in it or it makes my back twitch, I’m all for it.   Winter is okay as long as spring comes after it.

Fall is getting raw deal here.
The cicada’s are already shedding.   Leave are going to fall instead of change.
Trees, stretching all but barren limbs to a darken solid gray sky will await winter without so much as a sigh.

Pumpkin spice, the apparently preferred winter taste, is rearing it’s ugly head.
I heard Dunkin Doughnuts are already going full steam ahead.  Starbucks can’t be far behind.  Then, comes the cereal, candy, body wash, you name it…    It’s a holiday all to itself.

But, this winter, like the last, I could be playing snowbird.   Heading to Florida where snow is just a pipe dream and Christmas lawn decoration are judged by tackiness.  Blow up snowmen on green grass with a rousing organ piped version of “Sleigh Bells” is pretty tacky.   Flamingos with Santa hats — tacky.  Red and green lighted crocodiles – tacky.

Of course, I guess I really can’t complain a whole lot.   My Indiana neighbor celebrate Christmas all year round by keeping his Christmas lights up 24/7..  for the past 15 years, at least.

But, I guess that’s to be expected.   After all, they won some Christmas light award in the early 90s.    Who are we to knock on perfection?
