Don't live the American dream. Live your dream.

Open Letter to Ilhan Omar

Mrs. Omar,

Today, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that you didn’t understand the weight of the words you say and how they can be interpreted by others.

To me, that translated into “Please forgive her.  She knows not what she does.”

I have to wonder what that says about the higher educational status in America.

I understand that your position in the House of Representatives is new to you, but the most recent anti-semitic comment you made was not the first one.   Rather, I think it is the third unless there are some that have escaped my notice, which is entirely possible.

The first comment you made received backlash from various fractions, as did the second, and the third.   Your words became so potent that you inspired a legislative action against hate speech.

Honestly, I’m not sure that’s something to be proud of.

Let’s think about this.  The first remark, rather it was meant to be anti-semitic or not, could be thought of as an accident.  Sometimes, words come out wrong and, in the age of social media, word travels fast.  Personally, I would give you a free pass for that.

But, as a representative of the proud state of Minnesota and an educated woman, I would assume that you would educate yourself on the situation and avoid future remarks that would alienate people that you are trying to represent, cause additional governmental strife, and further embarrass yourself.

However, this did not happen.
Rather, the additional remarks and your lack of accountability for how those marks were interpreted shows a significant absence of critical thinking skills.

Apparently, you did not remember the outrage from your first remark.  You did not understand why or how your words affected people.   You did not apply the feedback you received from others.  Nor did you attempt to create a new and more professional image of yourself.

Rather, Mrs. Polesi had to stand in front of America and waste our time by stating that ‘You don’t understand…. ”

This is very disparaging.

So, I did a little digging and found that your education is a product of the Obama years as you graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 2011.

Mr. Obama essentially started the ‘bang for your buck’ idealism for most colleges.   Since the federal government was the primary grantor of student loans, colleges felt (and still feel) the pressure to produce “quality” and “qualified” students least the government funding is reduced or removed.

Consider that most college professors are adjuncts.  These are underpaid and underrepresented people whose livelihoods depend on producing the passing percentages of students in order to be paid.  Actually, they’re held hostage, often feeling forced to pass and cater to students.

This causes the quality of education to go down as the students become educational authority instead of the actual material.

Naturally, this would lead to stunted critical thinking skills in which you have proven to obviously lack.

I disagree with Mrs. Pelosi.
I think you have the capacity to understand that what you say has meaning, but you simply refuse to.

You are intelligent enough to be responsible and accountable for what you say and do, but you just don’t care.

Since you don’t care how you conduct yourself and communicate with others, why should I care about your policies and efforts?

In short, I don’t.
That is sad.

I sincerely hope that someone takes you by the hand and guides you during your years in the House of Representatives.  And, when your next election comes around, you either grow up and start acting like an adult or are defeated in office.

–  Sincerely,
A concerned American adjunct.
