Queen identification (Snow White)

I’ve indulged in the time-wasting click bait of what type of animal, princess, or Happy Days character am I.   Okay, so maybe not the Happy Days one, but you get the idea.

These things don’t really mean anything and it’s painfully obvious that the questions are uninspired.  The outcome could be whatever you want.

Well, personally, I thought that I identified with Snow White or rather the story of Snow White.

Snow is kind of like the handyman (handy person to be pc?) of the castle.   She doesn’t really cook or clean the latrines, but sweeps the floors, feeds animals, and does the odds and ends.  She doesn’t feed the people or directly helps, but she indirectly helps.

Everyone in the kingdom knows she’s a princess.   She knows she’s a princess.  Snow probably reminds people of a more patriarchal time before the Evil Queen.  I like to think that Snow is smart and just biding her time before the Evil Queen auctions her off to the highest royal bidder.   In the meantime, Snow isn’t making any waves.

Given her situation and lack of castle security, Snow could do just about anything she wanted to, including an uprising against the Queen.   But, no   It’s really difficult to understand why she didn’t rebel.

Maybe Snow was content with her life.   I’d guess there’s a lot less stress being a floor sweeper than a princess.  If the royals inbreed, maybe her mind was a little slow and she didn’t understand the situation.  Snow may not have wanted to sacrifice her fellow people in an uprising against the Queen.    Personally, I like to think that Snow admired the Queen.

Everyone has to admit that the Queen was pretty bad-assed.   She didn’t take crap from no one and ruled the kingdom without a man.   Sure, her reliance on a mirror is a little disquieting, but for all intents and purposes, the kingdom was flourishing.   The Queen was actually doing a good job.

As long as no one knocks the nest over her being ‘bad,’ everyone is content.  Why mess up a good thing?

But, maybe the Queen was getting lonely.  The traditional story paints her as being typical woman jealous of Snow, but I don’t believe that.  Satisfied with what she had, maybe the Queen wanted to branch out and have a child of her own to inherit the throne.   She’d spend her last years grooming the new Evil Queen.   This may not have been just for herself, but for the kingdom as well.  Everyone could continue to be prosperous.

But, to keep the crown, she would have to dispose of Snow.  Maiming and disfiguring wouldn’t be enough.  If anything, that could make it easier for people to take advantage and a new illegitimate heir be born.  The Queen could marry her off, but there would be some distant chance that Snow’s child would return to the kingdom should anything happen to the Queen’s lineage.

Sure, the last one seems unlikely, but it could happen.     Someone could want vengeance and all that…

So, logically, the best way would be to kill Snow.   The people are happy.   They’re not going to rebel and Snow doesn’t really do anything for them anyway.   Why not cut off her head and gouge her heart out?

The main problem is that the Queen couldn’t do it herself.  Just like Dr. Evil leaving the room trusting that sharks will do their work, the actual deed is never carried out.   At this point, we really have to question just how evil is the Evil Queen?

The Queen has numerous opportunities to poison Snow without leaving the castle.    We know that she can disguise herself so the murder couldn’t be traced back to her.   Going through the Huntsman, although potentially loyal, is a person from the pre-Evil Queen reign.    He can’t really be trusted to slay Snow, the only thread left of a patriarchal age.  She’s also pretty and a princess.  If something happened, who wouldn’t want royalty indebted to them?

The Huntsman could become a lord or something.   His entire future could change for multiple generations.

It’s beneficial for him to let Snow go and lie then it would be to kill her.  Lying to the Queen saying that he killed Snow works too.  It’s really a win-win as long as he’s not caught.   And who is exactly going to go look for Snow’s corpse when it should theoretically be half eaten by animals in the middle of a forest.

So, the Queen was stupid on this front.   I also think that she was stupid for asking a male to murder a royal.  And, again, I’m willing to bet that if the Queen had asked a female, the deed would have been done – no questions asked.

Given the time, it would have been highly unlikely that a female would have been granted title or land.  There (probably) wouldn’t have been any sexual inclinations.  A female murder would prove her worth to a female superior.  Any benefits and perks would be almost immediate.  There’s no family future to think of, but rather a personal advancement.   It’d be almost like getting a promotion.

The Queen’s overconfidence and trusting a male to do an important task – murder – was really her downfall.    The moment the Queen goes on the offensive to go after Snow, she lost.

But, it wasn’t just her who lost.

Snow is picked up by a wandering prince and is taken to be his bride.   The Queen is dead.   Snow’s home kingdom is without a ruler.  Unless someone steps up, which historically, would be a tyrant of some sort. —  Whenever a ruling class is toppled, the citizens who take over tend to be overwhelmed and the country goes to shit for a while.  (I’m looking at you Russia and France.)    Their prosperity is at an end.

Snow, for her part, goes from being a general handyman to a baby maker.  Her life, for the most part, isn’t really interrupted  — despite taking a step down as the prince would be the main ruler and she is subjected by him.

The kingdom that her father, grandfather, and great grandfather ruled goes to pot.

Okay, so maybe this isn’t so much about Snow as I planned, but the Evil Queen.   Who, I think, should really be admired despite her one fatal flaw – trusting in a man.

I really want to work on the garage today….   I could continue to bore, but I need to go out and be bitten by more bugs.    I also need a matching scratch on my right arm to go with the left.

I better get going….

Peace
