Don't live the American dream. Live your dream.

I watched Netflix’s He-Man Revelation.

But, before I watched it, I educated myself on the criticisms first.
It was being slammed for wokeness, primarily around the characterization of Teela.

Woke equals broke and all that. And wokeness is a particularly sensitive topic since He-Man is show about an (apparently) white cis-male who was born into luxury. He’s also the savior of the entire universe. That’s a toxic combination in type of political and social climate.

But, I really didn’t pick up on it.

The premise is stupid. Teela not knowing that Adam is He-Man is the just as crazy and Lois Lane not knowing Kent is Superman. Apparently, women who are capable in every area that counts are not perceptive enough to figure out that two men could be the same when they’re never in the same room.

I guess Teela gets a small pass since Adam (Netflix’s Adam) is kind of effeminate when compared to He-Man.
There’s certainly no excuse for Ms. Lane.

Anyway, I can understand Teela’s emotions for not being let in on the big secret. My family have hidden, accidently and on purpose, big events from me. I’ve been in the same situation but I think Teela entirely overreacted.

I can excuse her arms, hair, and her sidekick, Andra.
On the first viewing, I didn’t feel like there was anything between them outside of a close friendship. Teela is a sword for hire. She’s going to bulk up. Yeah, I seriously don’t like the hair. But, that’s not up to me.

Besides, she wouldn’t be the first person to drastically change something over a life altering event, no matter how disappointing her reaction.

Just not feeling the woke-hate here.
Maybe I’ll pick up on it with additiona viewings but I tend not to watch anything more than once. Hot Fuzz and Shawn of the Dead, of course, but other than that, I’m one and done.

What really sold me was the voice acting.

Mark Hamill, the best voice of the Joker ever, is Skeletor. Heck yep!
Since Joker’s history is multiple choice, part of my brain was trying to link the two together. Could Skeletor be the Joker with additional facial acid wash? There’s got to be some sort of connection there.
Outside of a couple of sentences that reminded me too strongly of the Joker, Hamill is easily the star.

I also really liked Lena Headey as Evil Lynn.
I’m not familar with her work and never watched the Game of Thrones. But, her voice was just perfect for the mature sometimes good sometimes bad but always intelligent Lynn.

Honorable mention, I guess, is Sarah Michelle Gellar voicing Teela. But, honestly, I didn’t know that was Gellar until I was looking up information for who voiced Evil Lynn. If pressed I would have said Gellar was Orko.
Sorry, Sarah. You’re just pale next to Mark and Lena.

He-Man Revelations isn’t too corny, but there is some corn. It feels like it’s a nod to the 80s version. (Don’t listen to Lynn. She’s got a Skeletor in her closet.) At some point, the trio of heroines where making fun of the poor puns that littered He-Man’s vocabulary.

Lynn, Andra, and Teela never lost any fight they fought. Nor did I even felt that their losing was a possibility. I guess that’s a nod to the current culture. But, at the same time, they didn’t seem to overtly patronize the men and, thankfully, the men could hold their own in battle. It wasn’t the reverse gender sterotype of damsel in distress. I was thankful for that. If Man-At-Arms coudn’t hold his own against a bunch of level 5 NPCs, I think a bit of me might have shattered.

The show cautiously sets itself up for a second season.
It could end where it ended — Skeletor with the sword and Adam backstabbed, I think I’d be fine. Skeletor/Hamil/Joker wins. I’m okay with that.

But, if Netflix wants to keep going and explore a world of Skeletor and Queen Lynn, I think I’d be okay with that too. Besides, there’s no quarentee that Adam is dead. He was backstabbed, sure, but that doesn’t mean he’s dead dead.

I watched this out of curiosity.
I don’t regret it, but it’s not something that I asked for either.
