Something happened yesterday that no one ever thought would – Roe V. Wade was overturned.
And, apparently, a lot of people lost their minds over this.
It’s amazing, really, the drama and reaction over this.
There are what people * thinks* it means and what it * actually * means.
People * think * it means that abortion is illegal.
— This is incorrect on a lot of different levels.
What this actually means is that abortion is based on the state, not the overarching federal government.
Think along the lines of marijuana legalization. Marijuana is considered a class 1 substance. It is unfit for medical use except for rare exceptions. ** However, ** states can decide to allow marijuana to be used for medical purposes, recreational purposes, or both. The people of the state decide on how the substance is used.
Abortion is the same way. The federal government doesn’t see abortion as a federal right. * But, * just like marijuana, the states can determine if it is legal or not and what policies and laws are set in place.
For example, Kansas has ruled that marijuana is illegal in all forms. If I wanted to indulge, all I would have to do is cross the border to Colorado and I could smoke until I got sick.
— This would be perfectly legal. Also, my money could potentially help a small business. The quality of the marijuana should be monitored to make sure it wasn’t cut with arsenic or something. It’s also quite possible I could find companions.
— The good people of Kansas are assured that their children aren’t being exposed. They know that the people who are working in the hospitals, teaching their children, and are serving their food aren’t (or aren’t supposed to be) exposed to marijuana.
This makes both sides happy, although inconvenient. There would be some travel involved crossing state lines.
Abortion is the same way.
From what I’ve read so far today, Indiana is likely to ban abortion or to ban it with few exceptions. That’s okay. If I needed an abortion, I would have to make time to head to Illinois and maybe Ohio. Yes, it would be inconvenient. But, I would know that the issue would (hopefully) be taken care of swiftly and safely. It could also be a boon I could select only those who I want with me. The neighborhood, family, and work may not be aware of the abortion. If the people I interact with treated me normally, my mental health might not have been impacted as severely.
If I felt strongly for a topic one way or the other, I am free to move to a state that is aligned with my viewpoint. Otherwise, it’s just a weekend trip.
Another way to think of this…
American have (in theory) freedom as long as it doesn’t imped anyone else.
I have the freedom to throw a punch. But, that freedom ends at the point I hit someone else. Then, I’m violating the other person’s freedom, which is unlawful. People can punch. But, they can’t punch me. That would impede my freedom and is unlawful.
I have the freedom to have an abortion or smoke marijuana as long as it doesn’t harm the people around me. I have to find a place to throw my ‘punch,’ as it were. Some states allow that and that is where I need to go.
There isn’t a restriction. Rather, I just have to define my time and place. The freedom still exists.
It’s just like having to go to a bar to drink a beer as public intoxication is harmful to others. If I smoke, it has to be in special section or outside because smoke is harmful to others.
Following me?
What this * does * change is the billing. It’s important to follow the money.
Planned Parenthood, a not-for-profit federally funded organization, is the forefront provider of abortions. I’m going to assume that since it’s federally funded, Planned Parenthood won’t be allowed to continue.
Independent abortion clinics in allowable states will become essential.
Insurance companies, businesses, and state governments are going to have to decide if they will pay for the process. If not, the woman would be held liable.
This follows the same pattern as the previous examples.
For example, if I chose to smoke, it is up to state agencies, businesses, and insurance companies to cover the cost of asthma medicine and cancer treatments. If nothing is in place, the smoker would be held liable for those charges.
The smoker chose to smoke.
The woman chose to have an abortion.
There has to be some sort of accountability somewhere. Smoking and abortion are not guaranteed rights by the Constitution.
Freedom provides choices.
Choices have consequences along with accountability.
I hope that people have the wisdom and intelligence to understand this.
But — This is what I feel that is happening and potential outcomes.
Abortion is a topic that is wrapped in abortion and historical significance. Generations of women have grown up believing that the federal government supports their right to kill their unborn child. Apart of that is the history of women being used as baby-makers. Maybe not so much in America, but historically and in other parts of the world, creating and rearing children are a primary goal. For example, think of the queens of Henry the VIII. Their value wasn’t their intelligence or even their physical appearance. When they failed to produce a male child, Henry divorced them.
Having the power to kill an unborn child also exercises a (mostly) female only power in a male-dominated world.
It really boils down to independence and a feeling of self.
Unfortunately, this potential feeling of independence is linked to the deaths of unborn and innocent children.
Women need to realize that they don’t need to abortion as a crutch to feel independent.
Further, the liberals and Democrats are tossing sand. They’re obscuring the nature of the ruling to make it seem that women are being dragged back to some type of dystopian era where our freedoms are limited, and women do not have control over their bodies.
This is clearly not the case. Although Roe was overturned, a woman who woke up today could still get an abortion. This has not changed from yesterday. She just might have to cross a state line to do it.
I think the Democrats are hoping that they will fool and deceive enough people to salvage the midterms in November. President Brandon might also try to add members to the Supreme Court to ensure that future decisions will be in his favor.
Democrats are relying on lies and deception to enact their policies and stay in power.
While this is not surprising and expected, it is disheartening. The Democrats continues its duplicity.
I only hope that Americans have the critical thinking skills, wisdom, and intelligence to see through this.
But… given my interactions with adult college students, I have little hope of this actually being the case.
It’s a sad world.
