I don’t think anything ‘new’ is being created.
There’s a sincere lack of global innovation.
Rather, much like the movie industry, old concepts are being re-conceived for ‘modern audiences.’
For example, buses exist. They’re not widely used, but they are there. It’s an option in most places. They’re expensive to maintain and take up a lot of room.
So, Elon is pushing a self-driving electric bus. It’s small, shiny, and probably doesn’t smell bad (yet).
Nothing new.
Just shiny and made for the ‘modern audience’ in an attempt to appeal to people. Except this one will come with facial recognition, weigh a lot, and seriously won’t run when it’s cold.
The same problems will persist and, over time, will probably worsen.
Example number two:
– Social media.
Instead of using a phone, letter, or email, a person could speak to friends and family. It is a device that capitalized on the Internet trend for ‘modern audiences.’
It’s played out to cause eyestrain, collect personal information, promote stocking, and cause a feeling of isolation and depression. The third space has all but vanished, and people strive for that ‘perfect life,’ chasing clicks by going into deep debt to create unboxing videos.
Example number three:
– Food (of course I’d bring this up)
At one time, it was helpful. It was developed to aid during wartime. Self-stable food helped to ensure the soldiers didn’t go hungry and to deter food shortages during times of national crisis.
Now…. well… now it’s an addictive substance that enslaves people to dopamine. It isn’t food but a product to hit that bliss point (the cross between salty, sweet, and fat). It clogs veins, causes brain fog, and pushes an overweight but undernourished population.
Supplements, a new ‘technology,’ are being used to band-aid the gap.
—- When technology is used to “solve” social issues, the issues are not resolved. They snowball.
The modern audience isn’t modern.
It’s the same. People have the same fundamental needs as their parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents.
But, instead of developing something new – methods and devices that people rely on are updated, enshittified, and pull people even further apart.
The more that is offloaded, the less friction, the worse society becomes.
Friction is needed to thrive.
We’re not thriving.
It’s just tossing a silver coat of technobabble on old shit and claiming it’s new.
